Someone has a virus in their computer, within the arboricultural community. I am aware of one person who received an infected e-mail from me, an e-mail I never sent, the virus put my name on it. The same person also received an infected e-mail from a very well respected member of this forum, who never sent it. PLEASE, if you do not have anti virus software, GET IT!!!! I am not implying that this virus came from Russ's board here, many of us visit different boards. It is easy to understand how a lot of us could be listed on someone else's address book. The virus changes the name of the originating source.

Sounds like the KLEZ virus, which my antivirus has had to scrub off a dozen times in the last month.
james is right; good antivirus essential.

James is referring to the KLEZ virus. this is now the third most prevalent virus of all time (number of infected computers) and is running rampant. It hides itself by changing the name of the sender to someone else's name found in the address book. It then sends copies with a variety of subject lines. It contains code that runs under Windows mail applications to repeat the process.

If you have anti virus software, keep it up to date and active. If you don't, please get it. You run the risk of damaging your computer and of spreading this kind of problem to others.

Webmaster's note: This board cannot spread the KLEZ or any other virus, nor can it be used as a mailing list for a worm or virus. Most of those are executable applications that are spread via direct email.

If you want to find out where the email is coming from, go to your email applications Preferences or Settings, and set to show Long Headers. The entire Internet pathway will be shown in the message header. The first address listed is the actual address where the message originated. It may be different from the "From" address. The "From" field is changed by the virus and is probably erroneous.

An equally effective virus avoidance tool is the Mac. When virii rolled in on the wings of my emails, I generally sent a warning note to the sender that he/she was infected. Then, I trashed their email.

Write Mr Monopoly, the not socialized Gates (for the latest trial anyway), and ask why did he only recently instruct his brood to work extra hard on security. A little late, eh billy?

Is Wulkie a Mac geek?

I've been using Mac for 10 years and have never yet had a successful virus invasion. All this other stuff is just an annoyance. And with some new antispam software I installed, even the annoyance is going away now.

Mac users, look for SpamFire at
