To add to Bob's post: apical or terminal growth on roots and shoots responds to external and internal stimuli, like all growth. Internally, apical growth is goverened by things like starch reserves, dormancy state, species factors, and physical position on the plant. Externally, it is controlled by factors such as light, temperature, soil oxygen and texture (roots), and day-length. There was a very good article on "How trees grow" by Dr. William Chaney in the journal Tree Care Industry for April 1996. |
