Could someone please explain what is apical growth and what is it in a response to, if any?

Dave,

Apical growth is that which occurs at the tip of a branch from the terminal bud. It makes the twig become longer and is a normal part of growth in the plant.

To add to Bob's post: apical or terminal growth on roots and shoots responds to external and internal stimuli, like all growth. Internally, apical growth is goverened by things like starch reserves, dormancy state, species factors, and physical position on the plant. Externally, it is controlled by factors such as light, temperature, soil oxygen and texture (roots), and day-length.
There was a very good article on "How trees grow" by Dr. William Chaney in the journal Tree Care Industry for April 1996.
