Necrosis on Palm trunks...

We have about 90 Washingtonia Palm trees we care for at this one particular site. These palms were planted about 10 yrs. ago. Many of them are developing canker like depressions in the trunks, some so severe, they are actually hollow formations. Most are just beginning to form. They start out as slight depressions just barely visible to the eye. When you push on these depressions, you can see that the outer tissue is actually decaying. The necrotic areas seem to expand inward with time, however the size of the wound does not seem to spread on the outer trunk. There does not seem to be a distinct pattern and the wounded areas appear along the length of the trunk, some high, some low, some in the middle. The crowns of these palms are very healthy and have good color, the problem seems to only manifest itself in the woody trunk tissues.

Any ideas??
