Order the ISA CA Study Guide. You can get it from the ISA directly as well as some arborist suppliers, I think. ISA address: http://www2.champaign.isa-arbor.com/
Learn the material in the study guide at a minimum, and I'd suggest following up with at least some of the recommended references you'll find there.
