Hi all!

I was referred here from GardenWeb, and so glad to find you!

I have three lovely adult maples, around which I'd like to make raised gardens. I understand I have to leave some space between the trunk and the dirt so it can breathe.

What I don't know is how much space? And, some of the rather substantial roots are on the surface. Will being covered with topsoil and compost harm the trees?

Soil should be away from trunk just enough to avoid contact, 4-6"?
Maples will tolerate some fill over roots, depending on how porous the soil is. The bigger problem will be maple roots growing into your new garden. Cover with landscape fabric before adding new soil.
