Are Norway Maples known to be allelopathic to any particular plants?

Not in the true sense, secretion of growth retartdents, but the dense canopy of large thick leaves decreases the light enough that many things will not grow, esp, turf.

The recent issue of Arborist News (ISA, June 1999, Vol. 8, No. 3, page 53) has an article by Dr. Kim Coder on allelopathy in trees. A chart provided suggests Norway maple has moderate effects, via roots and leaves. The article discusses pathways, chemicals, and degree of effects.

I think your comment was at least partially right, John. Competition is keen for root space beneath a Norway maple. I'm not too sure about shade, but it probably does contribute. There are plants that grow in very heavy shade, that don't make it under Norways, for whatever reason.
