I was visiting with a client regarding their Cutleaf Weeping Birch (Betula pendula gracillis). The tree is having problems. The leaves in July are very stunted and small. Discussion revealed previous contruction and severing of roots on one side of the tree. I am leaning more towards severing roots and equipment compacting as contributing to the birch demise. Further discussion led to the hottub about 40 feet from the tree and in the corner of the house and garage area. Apparently the hottub leaks and the installed drain pipe goes to with in the trunk of the birch. Assuming more major roots were not severed (the pipe comes directly to the tree from the corner not across), I am asking myself could the bromine treated water be toxic to the tree also? Has anyone had experience with this situation?

The drain pipe goes to within 15 feet of the birch trunk.
