Our mammosa tree has completely died. 2 weeks ago it was only 1/2 dead and then today when we got in from work, all the leave/fingers have fallen off, there is a spot on the tree that looks like the tree 'leaked' and there are many dead white worms (small like inch worms) on the trunk. We are going to cut it down, but were curious to see if anyone had ever had something like this? also want to know if it can be a danger to other trees in the area. We have a smaller mammosa that is about 5 feet away and it seems fine.....
HELP

There can be many reasons a tree will die. Usually it takes a long time, but it is possible that a disease infection will grow undetected, and the tree will appear to die quickly.

The only way to know what caused the death would be an on-site investigation, looking for signs of insect or disease problems. Anything else would be just guessing.

The most common mimosa disease is a wilt for which there is no treatment I know of. Remove all parts of the dead tree, especially the "leakage". Avoid wounding your other mimosa.
Consider replanting a less-disease-prone tree. Vitex can be a good replacement for mimosa in the right site. An arborist on site can manage your trees to add value to your home --see www.isa-arbor.com
