Hi,

I'm a court reporter working on a case involving root rot. The witness thought the Latin term for this disease was something like "pineous poreai." I'm just trying to find the spelling for the quote words. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Cindy Koch

The closest thing to what you say is Polyporus, which is the genus name of a fungus which is now known as Phaeolus. Pinus is the genus name for pine trees.

Polyporus schweinitzii is a widespread trunk-and-root decay organism that attacks mainly pines and other conifers.

Can you get whoever was testifying to give you the right spelling?

Hi, Guy,

Thanks for your help. The witness had no idea of the spelling. He's a logger and has simply heard the term. He may not even be pronouncing it correctly. You have helped me with pinus -- I was spelling it pineous. I have found the term "poria" relating to a fungal-type disease, so guess I'll go with pinus poria. Nobody probably cares (as to the correct spelling) but me anyway -- and I've spent way too much time digging around. [Wink]

Thanks again for taking the time.

Cindy

Perhaps you may figure it out from the link below.
A number of scientific names for fungi are changed over time, so there is some confusion in terminology at the non-expert level.
