This is about the 3rd or 4th year I am getting English Walnuts off my trees but this year about 75 % of the Green outer shells have turned black. Can you tell me what is causing this?

The outer husk is a living part of the tree, until it falls. Before it drops from the tree, the connection with the tree is blocked off, preventing fluids and nourishment from reaching the husk. After this happens, the live tissues die, and lose the chlorophyll that makes them green. This can also be caused by some types of infection.

The color of the husk is not a problem. By the time the fruit falls, the nut inside is isolated from the husk. The nuts should still be OK.
