I planted the Alder 15 years ago. It has lost about 1/4 of its leaves. Many branches have died. One nursery thinks problem is Flatheaded Alder Borer. Another thinks it is a root problem. Several types of dead insects foud on leaves but not identified. Would like to save tree. Need prompt answers. Also would appreciate names of arborists in San Jose, CA area that may be able to help.

I think this will need an on-site inspection to determine the cause of the problem. The borers (if they are present) are probably secondary to other stress factors, but once established can finish off the tree.

Find a local ISA Certified Arborist. The International Society of Arboriculture maintains a current list of ISA Certified Arborists. The searchable list can be accessed at the ISA Web site, at:
