Has anyone used the "ugly stub" method of pruning to control fireblight in fruit trees?
It is described in Publication GH-93 at the linked site.
It appears to be a method used when branch removal is done during the growing season.
Thoughts, anyone?

Mark, I found the description at HG (not GH)-93.
the purpose as I understand it is for this stub to "pull" the inoculum from the branch, below where a sanitation cut would be made. By removing it Nov-Jan, the inoculum would be removed before it reproduces.
This would be a useful alternative if heading the branch back would be excessive.
It's an interesting thory, and I'm inclined to try it next year if I run into the disease and can sell the customer on a repeat pruning Nov-Jan. (I've learned not to rely on customers who swear they'll "handle it'.)
Gh-93 recommended a copper spray but not Agri-mycin, which is recommended elsewhere and found effective in NC. Wonder whynot.
