Maple tree loosing branches and leaves as they get black spots, wilt and fall off. There are also grey spots on the trunk and larger branches. All started low and worked up.

You dont mention your city/state, that would help more.
In Milwaukee, we are seeing a new fungus called tar spot or black tar. Seems to be superficial here.
It is almost October, could it be seasonal leaf drop?
The graey patches could be lichon, wich is benign.
The only way to be sure is to take samples of the leaves to an extention office or have an Arborist (am I suposed to put certified there?) who deals with pest problems look at it.

I am seeing black spots on my maples too - the leaf loss isn't seasonal yet - I'm in Merrimac Ma, any idea of what to do for curative steps? BTW, gray spots are lichen
