The problem with bark falling could be serious, depending on how extensive it is. Some older trees normally shed the outer bark, so unless the wood is actually exposed, it could be normal (the disavantage of online diagnosis, not being aboe to see the patient). If the tree had a heavy crop of seed this year, the leaves may be late coming out. Flowering and seed procudtion in maples requires a tremendous amount of the energy the tree stores, reducing the amount available for the leaves. The result is the leaves come out a bit late, and the tree looks more sparse. There could be other problems, too. The best thing to do is contact a local ISA Certified Arborist to inspect the tree for problems. The International Society of Arboriculture maintains a current list of ISA Certified Arborists. The searchable list can be accessed at the ISA Web site, at: http://www.isa-arbor.com |
