I have a declining Red Oak, it has some sort of insect on the bark, they have a snapping sound to them, is it a borer? Is this insect killing the tree? No construction or changes to drip line, although it was badley pruned a couple of years ago.If anybody can tell me what insect I'm dealing with, I would be appreciative.

You might see if any of the species listed under damaging agents match your insect. There is a lot of info at this site:

Hi Rebecca, check for long, curved antennae, longer than body of black beatle. If your bug has this feature than you have pine bore, or asian pine beatle, the latter will have white spots. An integrated pest management plan set up by your county extension forester is a good place to start. Good luck
