Here is a review of a book that may be of great help in understanding decay:

Guy, nice review. Great of Russ to post it. Sounds like a good book.

Claus cautioned in his Fall lecture tour that the reader should remember that the book's examples are German fungi on German host species and that specific observations may vary in other environments. The general materials of course should be broadly applicable.

Scott, as mentioned in the review, many of the usual suspect buttrotter species--Inonotus dryadeus, Armillaria mellea, Ganoderma lucidum, etc. are the same in Germany as US.

As for environment, Karlsruhe is about the same latitude as CT isn't it?

Book is well worth the $60. Illustrations will blow your mind. Good globalization, Batman!

This book is not easy reading, but it has improved my understanding. It is a worthy resource which I hope to have at hand as a reference, after the inter-library loan runs out.

Certainly not light-hearted, bed time reading. But what a wonderful expansion on " Tree Pathology' written by William H Smith back in 1970. Interesting to note how much information Smith had back then!!
So much information is not "new" information, it is simply revisited, reworked and up-dated information. Ahhhh!!!! The joys of still trying to learn something.

James.

Guy, I'm not enough of a patholgist or mycologist to answer that meaningfully. I just wanted to pass on that Claus himself offered the caution to us in Berkeley last Fall.

I have set up a link to order this book directly online from amazon.com. Click on the title link in the header at the top of this page to go directly to the book order page. List price is US$54.00 at amazon.com.

Please note: If you order books through this website, a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the ISA TREE Fund (formerly ISA Research Trust). A great price and a donation to trees all at once! But hurry! Amazon listed only 4 books (2 new, 2 used) and I just purchased on of them. [Smile]
