This morning's Denver Rocky Mountain News business section has an article from a private company which has put up a satellite for private for profit photographs of the earth.
During the press conference it showed at photo taken of Wahsington DC. Street lines were visible as well as cars in the parking lot. Claims of photo being ablee to detect images the size of a coffee table and being able to provide coordinates correct to within two yards.
Photos are in black and white and cost between thirty dollars and six hundred dollars.

Thanks Bill. Saw the same article in NY Times, but they did not provide contact info.

Wayne Cahilly just advised me about Microsoft's "terraserver" which has a lot of c.1970-1997 images. I also found as USGS "terraserver." Do a search on that word.

Have you had any need to or luck in obtaining historical sequences of images to track say urban sprawl, loss of open space, increase in tree cover as farm land goes fallow?

The MS Terraserver is neat. I can see my car parked in the driveway in 1992. Not everything is covered, but it's a good place to start.
