I'm trying to find software I can use to map tree locations, species and size on lots where homes are to be built. New tree preservation ordinances in my city require home builders to have such a survey done by a certified arborist that they submit with their plans when applying for a building permit. What I need is a program into which I can input data from my field survey sketch and produce a crisp, professional map of the lot with the location of trees, species, etc, clearly shown. If there's other related software helpful to this process, I'd love to know about that as well. As always, thanks a ton for all the wonderful Knothole assistance.

Tom

I'm not sure if what you describe is available in one program, at least not low end programs. The inventory portion is a simple enough database. The mapping portion is graphics.

The ideal I suppose is a GIS program. Davey Resource Group and ACRT both have tree inventory programs. One or both link to GIS (Geographic Information System) software. But you need geo-coded data to provide the base mapping, and this is typically for large areas like a city or county.

Something like Auto-Cad might be better for single lots or subdivisions, but that's high proced software with a steep learning curve (are you out there Wayne?).

What I've used quite a bit to provide single lot base mapping is Deed Plotter+ from Greenbriar Graphics (828-495-3366). You enter a metes and bounds description from the deed and it plots a map on your printer. I've not used it in conjunction with inventories... it has no database capability.

You also need to think about output. A site of any size or with many trees will get very clutterd on 8.5x11.0. HP 11x17 printers are down around $500 (I'm very pleased with mine) or you can research providing a digital file to someplace like Kinko's and have them do bigger output.

As amatter of interest....how much would people be willing to spend on an all singing, all dancing, GIS linked, handheld surveying system ?
