My attention was drawn on your technical report on the "Biltmore stick". You mention that this old tool is dating around the middle of the 18th century.

Could you give me some references in the literature attesting it is so old.

Sorry, can't give a direct reference other than "class notes' from a silviculture course I took. The earliest uses (as I was told) were in late colonial days when a similar device was used for marking timber. The name Biltmore came later, but I don't have particular information I can cite.
