I have created a database file that calculates the trunk formula and compounded costs values, based on the Guide. The file is for sale (email me for details). It currently requires that you have FileMaker Pro 3.0 or higher installed to run it. Later this year I hope to have it available in a runtime version, so it will work by itself.

What I am looking for now are lists of the regional tree species. I need the genus, species and common names. I do not expect the rating values, as many chapters sell their rating books. I do not intend to include that information. However, I would like to at least include the tree names.

If you have a list of trees in any computer format that you are willing to share with me, please let me know. I hope to build the file to eventually include most North American trees.
Thanks
Russ

Russ, a good place to start is getting a copy of ISA certification test species study guides. I put together a data base for a software program, and used this as a starting point. Also, check Landscape Contractor and Nursery certification lists. If someone is selling it, installing it, or maintaing it I guess it must be in use.

Lew, it's not really the list I'm looking for- just the names in electronic form. It will save me hours of typing them in . The other problem, of course, is linking them to the right regions. Some chapters sell the lists, so obtaining them all could cost a bit (although I already have a small stack of them).

Thanks, Bill. All I'm looking for now is an electronic list, so I don't have to type them all in. Any format will do- I'll sort it all out and extract what I need. Would also like to include common shrubs, too.

Russ, I agree, it takes a long time to enter data. I've got about ten months part time to get the 5,000 trees and shrubs for North America. I'll check with the software developer to see if they will let me share with you the portion you are looking for. Great board. Keep up the good work.

Russ,

I have 55,000 botanical names with their synonoms in our plant-records database, and you just requested the one thing we cant do with this thing! For all it will do, we never designed it to sort by nation since that field is a default that appears on all screens and reports. Computer services is stewing on this one. If we do figure out how to sort out North American trees from herbs native to Borneo and the like, I will let you know.

Regards

Wayne

Thanks for checking, Wayne. I don't think I really want to put 55,000 names in my files (although I wouldn't have to worry about finding anything again.)

Is there any way to sort on a location or native range?

To All: Even if you only have a local list, anything will help.
