You have discovered one of the nasty little secrets of poplar tree family. They have a lot of stored energy in the root system, and are very good at sending up new shoots when the trees is destroyed above.
To get rid of them- the easiest way is to mow them regularly with the lawn mower. Get them before the shoots get very large and hard. Another option is to use one of the Roundup products. Let the shoot grow a few inches high, then wet the leaves with Roundup. This will cause a slow down in growth in the shoot, and the prduct will kill off some of the root system. However, with a large root system, it will probably still take repeated applications to kill the root system. If you clip shoots, drip a little bit of Roundup on them too. NOTE: Be careful using Roundup. It can kill or damage any plant whose foliage it gets on. Protect surrounding grass with a little ring of plastic or foil to protect it. Remove carefully to avoid dripping. Hope this helps. -- Russ Carlson, RCA |

I don't know if this is true but a very wise Maine Forester told me that if you girdle the tree and let it die it will not produce suckers.
Usually! Good luck 8^) |

I'm not experienced with Aspen, but many other trees that otherwise produce sprouts when trunk-cut will usually die if girdled. If they do sprout, the sprouts are often less numerous and less vigorous.

Napthalene acetic acid (NAA) will wither sprouts and not kill turf. It is a tree growth regulator.
I've used the brand "Sucker Stopper" with good results on cottonwood, linden, malus sp.... Repeated application is needed, but the density of the recurring spruts is less each time. <hr> John Paul Sanborn Consulting Arborist/Subcontracting Arborist SE Wisconsin 414-379-0442 |
