i live in delaware and i think i can come with a name and number of a guy i know , not sure if he will go that far or not. also the tree needs to be sound for them to carve. usually they carve live trees that were just cut. i will see if i can find his number for you. john

Thanks John, I appreciate your help. I am concerned that the tree is not viable for carving. The tree did have a few blooming branches last summer but this year, it is completely bare and looks dry. If this is a dead tree will I guess the carving option is out, right?

If the tree is dead, it might still be OK for a carved 'statue'. If the wood is reasonably solid, an artist can probably work with it. The problem will be that the wood has already been exposed to decay fungi, so the end result may not last a long time. Here in Delaware, a sycamore stump was carved into an 8-foot tall 'Darth Vader'. It lasted about 5 years, but may have been taken out when the city got tired of hearing complaints about it from neighbors. [Smile]

Russ,
any chance you know how I could get in touch with an artisit who might be interested in giving my tree a try at being carved?
Staten Island, NY is not that far from Delaware but anyone interested in carving will not be able to do it in one day - is there a directory of 'tree carvers/artisit'?
Where can I begin a search - websites, phone lsitings, etc.
Thanks for your help.

I don't know of anyone I can think of who can do that. I suggest you post a message on other boards, too, to see if anyone can make a suggestion.

The International Society of Arboriculture has a message board that is read by many arborists. Visit http://www.isa–arbor.com

My name is John Olstrom and I am a tree sculptor among other things and I am capable of creating sculptures of any subject matter to the highest quality. I was doing some research on the internet when I came upon your inquiry. I realize that this is nearly a year later however if you are still interested in having your tree sculpted, I am located on Long Island and would consider talking to you more about it.I am also in the process of putting together a web page, hometown.aol.com/sculpturesbyjohn/SculpturesByJohn.html. Contact me if you would like to discuss if further. John

I would like to know how to stop your carving from cracking and how to let the water out of the trunk
