I have several oak trees that have suffered from construction damage 8 years ago. The top portion of the tree is dead, while the bottom is full of new growth. My question is: Can I save these trees? Can the dead portion be topped? Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, certainly you can remove (top) the dead parts of your Oaks, however in doing so you are simply dealing with symptoms not problems. If the root systems of your trees got trashed during construction 8 yrs ago, there may not be a lot of hope. If you want to spend money helping your trees, I would suggest you spend it in the ground where the damage occurred rather than in the crown where you see the symptoms,

Dear James

So we may have root damage? Besides the questionable data on vertical mulch and mycorrhiza inoculation, what "miracle" do you suggest to promote root development given that there may be a potential for initial and disasterous removal of both woody and fibrous rooting matrix??? Do we prune or fertilise to compensate, I don't think so, we simply wait and watch and allow for natural adaptation.

Although I do apologise if your miracle works!

Hey Paul!!! Slow down here. What "miracle" have I suggested in my post??? All I have done is to suggest that looking at the soil/roots might be more beneficial than cutting deadwood out of the crown. I do not understand your sarcastic attitude, it is totally negative and does nothing to help understanding of a problem plus it does you no credit at all!
James.

OK Paul, Yes, I am looking for a miracle, it is called "D-I-A-G-N-O-S-I-S". The word is probably in the dictionary!!!

The cut and thrust of Arboricultural debate. Basic analysis plus fundemental CPD - I love it!!!

Paul H.

PS. I don't own a dictionary - the English word should be understood by all and without the need to refer to it!
