How can you tell a female pear tree from a male pear tree (for pollination purposes)?

Pears are not separated between male and female plants. The problem in pear pollination is that each tree is self-sterile and requires cross-pollination from a suitable other tree, with the pollen being transported between trees by insects. See the site linked below.
