I am the proud owner of a baby spruce tree. I think it may be a black spruce, but I really don't know. I originally found it growing by the wooden fence by our house 3 years ago. We transplanted it to the backyard when we had the fence replaced back in March. We were very careful of its roots when we dug it up. It's usually a very healthy little tree (dark needles, new green growth every spring). However, recently I've noticed that some of the lower branches have gotten some brown needles on them. The majority of the tree is still green & healthy + it has more new growth on the upper branches this year. I know older spruce trees' lower branches die off as the tree grows, but this is a very small young tree (not even up to a person's knee yet). So my question is: are a few brown needles toward the bottom a sign of health problems, or is this normal? How can I keep the tree healthy?
