This woodlot has high gravel content. We had big snow during winter, but a severe drought for nearly a month after snow melt. Mature oaks here began to produce early leaves, then shut down completely, and appear dead. We received .7" rain in past 3 days, but no difference so far. Are they dead, or dormant? Thanks DK

Location? Age/size of trees? How many affected? These kind of symptoms before?
Many clues may be needed to determine what is going on. It is much better to have a qualified expert analyze the situation on-site, rather than guess from afar.
You may be dealing with trees stressed due to competition and unfavorable environmental conditions. Or there may actually be a pathogenic disease involved. Perhaps you are in an area affected by acid rain. Or maybe something else.
Find a local expert. That's my advice.
