Hello, I have questions about my Scotch Pine...
Here is what experts say about cones opening: "Scotch pine cones begin to open in late October, and seed dispersal continues into December" (Scoth pine sylvic) The cones of my Scotch pine currently start to open but we are only the 12th january !!! 3 months too late ? (it's like that every years) I live in Quebec (Canada). Can hards winters be the cause (average of -10°C)? Today, I took about 30 cones from my pine ; I put them in oven (65°C) to open them, then I collected the seeds... I was surprised to see that almost all the seeds was not good (shell empty).... (it's couldn't be a bad luck : I had a big amount of seeds and I took the biggest cones from different branches of the tree). So I have 2 questions: 1- What could explain that the cones open only in mid-january instead of october as usual for this species? 2- What could explain that the seeds are not good? Thank you very much! Bye! |
