We have a beautiful 20 year old evergreen tree in our from yard. I noticed that the top 12 inches or so has turned brown, other than that the tree looks very healthy. There are a lot of little brown cones in that area as well. Is this a disease and can it be cured?

Can you say what species of tree you have? Also, what are the general site conditions where the tree is situated?
What geographical region?
Here is a link showing one possible tip blight (Sphaeropsis sapinea), a fungus that attacks during rainy conditions in the Spring.

You might also look into the Pine Weevil larvae or the various tip moths.
