Need a tree screen across rear of property to hide home behind us. Houston, TX area, well-drained soild, sunny. Considering Jap. black pine. What are the growth characterristics? What type of spacing would provide the best screen. What growth patterns should I expect each year, under average conditions? Mature height/width? Any planting tips? Thanks, Mary

The Japanese black pines at CSU Chico are not one of the more full-canopied types of pine.
They are somewhat sparse and lanky. I would not personally consider them as a screen plant.
Perhaps others have another experience in other locations, using candling pruning to keep them dense?
