I hope this isn’t too late, Jenny.
To learn the condition of the trees, the first thing to do is contact the association, and perhaps their tree service, to find out why the trees are marked and why they feel they must go (if that’s the case). Next is to get an arborist to give you an independent assessment. You may have to pay a consulting fee, though. Check at the American Society of Consulting Arborists referral list for consulting arborists near you. You might also look for a Certified Arborist in your area willing to offer his expertise.
