Slaughter, Garey W. and David M. Rizzo, 1999. Past forest management promoted root disease in Yosemite Valley. California Agriculture, 53(3)(May-June):17-24.

A sequence of management practices led first to dense coniferous cover, then to large numbers of stumps which were colonzed by root decay fungi, then to infection of standing trees in increasing large ares, resulting in failures which have resulted in property damage and injuries including fatalities. Park managers have establish a program of hazardous tree removal (no protocols explained) but issues remain in reconciling ecosystem restoration and public safety.
