NY Times 5/25/00 p. B3 reports NYC Parks Dept. using $2mill federal grant to hire 20 new employees to cut back vines on trees throughout City parks. "They have killed thousands of trees as well as shrubs and flowers....." The troublesome vines are escapes from residential plantings.
Escaped vines were mentioned as a feature of growing conditions in "woodland like" settings in "Kepinf The Green Promise: an action plan for NYC's urban forest," 1998 by the Regional Plan Assoc. & the Environmental Action Coalition. (Not cited in this article however.)
