2nd ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Joint Meeting of the
17th NORTH AMERICAN FOREST BIOLOGY WORKSHOP
and
WESTERN FOREST GENETICS ASSOCIATION
July 15-19, 2002
Washington State University
Pullman, WA

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 17th North American Forest Biology Workshop is the most recent in a
series of biennial technical conferences that began at Michigan State
University in 1970. These meetings have become a "must attend" event
for exchange of technical information and ideas amongst scientists
working in many areas of basic forest biology, ecology, silviculture,
genetics and conservation throughout North America.

Conference web site: http://nafbw.wsu.edu . Be sure to click your
browser's refresh button each time to get the latest information.

Plenary Sessions Theme:
"Rocky Mountain Ecosystems: Diversity, Complexity, and Interactions".
Invited speakers will present reviews of work on ecophysiology, water,
water use and water use efficiency, riparian ecosystem dynamics,
interaction of forest and range biology with salmon habitat, and the
interaction of disturbance with species diversity, biogeochemical
cycling, and health of Rocky Mountain ecosystems.

Invited speakers include:

S.J. Brunsfeld, University of Idaho
J.P. Dobrowolski, Washington State University
S. Hagle, USDA Forest Service
J.N. Long, Utah State University
J. D. Marshall, University of Idaho
J.A. Moore, University of Idaho
D.L Peterson, USDA Forest Service
S. Rood, University of Lethbridge
W.K. Smith, Wake Forest University
G.H. Thorgaard, Washington State University

Contributed Oral Presentations and Posters:
Oral presentations and posters in all areas of forest biology are
invited. Abstracts for both are due April 1, 2002 . Abstracts and
posters should follow the format specified on the conference web site
http://nafbw.wsu.edu . Oral presentations will be limited to 20
minutes, including a five-minute period for discussion. Please note
that it may be necessary to restrict the number of oral presentations to
prevent an excessive number of concurrent sessions. Early submission of
abstracts is encouraged.

Publication:
Abstracts of invited papers, contributed papers and posters will be
published in a conference proceedings. Authors may also elect to
publish their entire paper in the proceedings or submit it for
consideration in a special issue of the journal Tree Physiology. See
guidelines for preparing manuscripts on the conference web site.

Washington State University is the Land Grant University for Washington,
founded in Pullman in 1890. Branch campuses were established in
Spokane, the Tri-Cities and Vancouver in 1989. Enrollment at the
Pullman campus of WSU is about 18,000 with a total enrollment
state-wide, including branch campuses, of 22,000. WSU offers over 150
different areas of study, the broadest of all universities in the
state. Many of the academic programs are ranked amongst the best in the
nation and the world. Washington State University has three faculty
elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the nation's highest honor
for scientific researchers.
Plenary and poster sessions will be held at the Compton Union Building.
Concurrent sessions will be held in Johnson Hall. Various coffee shops,
